Why Does My Vape Taste Burnt?
If your vape suddenly tastes burnt, it can completely ruin the experience. A burnt taste usually means the coil inside your device is overheating or the cotton wick inside the coil has dried out.
Fortunately, most burnt vape issues are easy to fix once you understand what causes them. Below are the most common reasons your vape may taste burnt and what you can do to solve the problem.
1. Your Vape Coil Is Burnt
The most common reason for a burnt taste is a worn-out vape coil. Inside every vape coil is a cotton wick that absorbs e-liquid. Over time this cotton begins to degrade and burn, especially if the coil has been used heavily.
Most vape coils last between 5 and 14 days depending on how often you vape and what type of e-liquid you use.
Signs your coil needs replacing
-
Burnt or harsh taste
-
Weak flavour
-
Reduced vapour production
-
Dark or discoloured cotton inside the coil
If you notice these signs, replacing the coil will usually solve the problem immediately.
2. The Coil Was Not Primed Properly
A new vape coil must be primed before use. Priming means allowing the cotton wick inside the coil to absorb e-liquid before the device is fired.
If you start vaping immediately after installing a new coil, the cotton can burn instantly. Once cotton burns, the burnt taste usually cannot be removed.
How to prime a vape coil
-
Add a few drops of e-liquid directly onto the coil’s cotton ports
-
Install the coil into your tank or pod
-
Fill the tank with e-liquid
-
Wait 5–10 minutes before using the device
3. Your Wattage Is Too High
Every vape coil is designed to operate within a specific wattage range. If your device is set too high, the coil will heat up too quickly and burn the cotton wick.
This is especially common for new vapers using adjustable vape kits.
How to fix this
-
Check the recommended wattage printed on the coil
-
Lower your device wattage
-
Gradually increase power if needed
Using the correct wattage helps preserve coil life and improves flavour.
4. Your Tank Is Running Low on E-Liquid
Vape coils rely on e-liquid to keep the cotton wick saturated. If the tank runs dry, the cotton will burn almost immediately when the device is fired.
To prevent this problem:
-
Keep your tank at least one quarter full
-
Avoid chain vaping when the tank is nearly empty
Running your vape dry is one of the quickest ways to damage a coil.
5. Chain Vaping
Chain vaping occurs when someone takes multiple puffs in quick succession. When this happens, the coil may not have enough time to absorb more e-liquid between puffs.
If the wick dries out temporarily, it can produce a burnt taste.
How to avoid this
-
Take slower puffs
-
Allow 10–20 seconds between draws
-
Use a device suitable for your vaping style
6. Sweet or High VG E-Liquids
Some e-liquids contain very sweet flavourings. These liquids can cause coils to burn out faster because the sweeteners leave residue on the heating element.
High VG liquids can also shorten coil lifespan if your device is not designed for them.

How to Prevent a Burnt Vape Taste
Preventing burnt coils is much easier than fixing them. Following a few simple habits can dramatically extend coil life.
Simple tips
-
Always prime new coils before vaping
-
Keep your tank filled with e-liquid
-
Use the recommended wattage for your coil
-
Avoid excessive chain vaping
-
Replace coils regularly
Taking care of your device will improve flavour and save money on replacement coils.
When to Replace Your Vape Coil
If your vape still tastes burnt after trying the fixes above, the coil has likely already been damaged. Once cotton burns, the taste cannot usually be removed.
In this situation, the best solution is to install a new coil and prime it properly before use.
